Yukkis, long stay ward for psychiatric clients
Practical training period in Netherlands.
I arrived To Netherlands with Pinja in 12th of September 2011. We had some confusions with the dates when we should have been in Holland so we arrived a little bit late but we still made it.
We also had some difficulties on our way from Amsterdam to Dordrecht. I had some technical problems with my cellphone so I couldn’t contact my host Mother Zwanny, but after couple of reboots my Phone was working again. There also happened somekind of accident on the railway so the train was standing in Rotterdam for about an half hour. I hope no one was injured badly.
After the many difficulties we made it last to the Dordrechts trainstation.
There was my host Mother Zwanny waiting for me and we had a little chat while we were waiting Pinjas host mother. After she arrived it was time to move to their house which was going to be my home for next 5 weeks. House was lovely, three floors, own room and 2 cats not to mention kind family who welcomed me kindly to their home.
We were very Lucky due the weather. First three weeks it was amazing weather, it felt like summer. Everyday almost 20 celsius or over, sunny and I think im even browner than before I left to this trip.
My working place was located in Sliedrecht, about 10km to east from Dordrecht. I remember my first day at Yulius Organization. I was nervous and shaking in Zwannys car. She took me there in my first day so I could get there in time. But after that I usually went there in the mornings by train.
My duty at the Sliedrecht was to take care of people with menthal disorders. First weeks were hard for me because my brains wasn’t get used to english. But after few weeks training it started to get better and better and also tiredness caused by english disappeared.
During the workplacement in the Netherlands a group of teachers visited the Netherlands and came to
meet me at the farm en we had a discussion in the ward with Marijke, my tutor.
I don’t lie much if i say that these five weeks has been something what propably have changed my life forever in a good way. This is also the things i’ll remember rest of my life.
I have growed in my self-confidence a lot, im not anymore afraid of speaking english. I’ve also started to honour things what I have in my life. Family, friends and also enemies. Without these things life would be quite meaningless and boring. I’ve also started to apreciate more my homecountry than before even it still lies in northern europe and the winter’s coming (im not a winterperson).
If you have a chance to go for international work practice period, I really recommend that you’ll use that chance. Five weeks isn’t long time and those people in your country won’t disappear anywhere in that time. It gives you good experiences for your life and career and i promise that it will be one of the things you’ll remember rest of your life.
